Turkuaz Sahaf & Antiquariat was established in April 2001 by Püzant Akbaş and Emin Nedret İşli, who combined their 20 years of experince in the book selling and collecting. In the archieves of Turkuaz, it is possible to find thousands of old and rare books, engravings, maps and ephemera etc. At the same time, you can also get a qualified consultancy about Old & Rare books and Documents from Turkuaz.
From past to the day, lots of bookshops and bouquinists have been established in Beyoğlu district, which has a special place in the history of İstanbul bookstores, and on İstiklal Caddesi (Grand ruede Pera) that composes the most important part of it. In time, those bookstores and bouquinists had to abondone their places to other kind of commercial estabishements, and took their place in the history. Continuing the tradition of Cadde-i Kebir bookstores and bouquinists, which started, as far as we could learn till now, with the J. J. Wick in the nineteenth century, Sahaf Turkuaz, was established in April 2001 and keeps working in a confident way with the experience and aggregation of over twenty years of its founders. Short after its establishement, it became a center and a meeting place for bibliophiles & collectors, writers & researchers, men of letters & academicians. Sahaf Turkuaz, still studying on the history of Turkish publications & bookstores, on one hand, established exhibitions composed of publications, documents & ephemeras in its private collection, and on the other hand, publishes books about the subject. Sahaf Turkuaz, which was distinguished as one of the best ten bouquists & old bookshops in Turkey by Turkish daily newspaper Hürriyet, also publishes bibliographies. The first book published is "A Bibliography of Books, Theses and Articles Published in Turkey Concernig Judaism 1923 - 2003". Sahaf Turkuaz, which insists on continuing to establish new exhibitions and publishing books on the subject, keeps "selling mirror in the land of blinds", and walks through future in a confident way, with the great support of its friends & bibliophiles.
Emin Nedret Isli
Born in 1959, Cerrahpasha, Istanbul. He graduated from Pertevniyal Lycee, Istanbul University Faculty of Turkish Language and Literature. He got his MA degree from the same department in Istanbul University (1991). He worked in Librairie de Pera (1986-1998), Sermet Cifter Library of Yapı Kredi Bank (1998 - 2000). His articles were published in many periodicals such as Kitap-lik, Sanat Dünyamız, Cogito, Tarih ve Toplum, Toplumsal Tarih, Arkitekt, Album, Istanbul, P, Tombak, Muteferrika, Simurg, Dergah and Kapalicarsi.
He prepared "Halas" novel of Mehmet Rauf into publishing (1998). He also participated in the preparation of mny publications, such as Memories of Gazi Ahmet Muhtar Pasha, [Serguzest-I Hayatimin Cild-I Evveli], catalogues of Yapı Kredi Sermet Çifter Research Library: Yazmalar Kataloğu, Nadir Kitaplar Kataloğu; two city monographies: Edirne: Serhattaki Payitaht and Diyarbakir: Muze Sehir.
Puzant Akbas
Born in 1959, Taksim, Istanbul. He graduated from Cyprus Melkonyan Institute and then from the Major department of the same school (1970). He participated in establishment of Librairie de Pera bookstore in 1984, and worked there till his resignment in 2001. He consulted to the preparation of many book catalogues. He has many works and articles on Armenian Language and Armenian Literature. As an expert on Armenian books, he prepared many catalogues of old and rare Armenian Books.
Cevdet Serbest
Born in 1968, Gaziosmanpasa, Istanbul. He graduated from Vefa Poyraz Lycee (1985) and Bogazici University, Depaetment of Turkish Language and Literature (1996). He worked in Yapı Kredi Sermet Cifter Research Library (1993-2000). He prepared crosswords for periodicals. He participated in preparation of Catalogue of Laika Karabey Archieve for Ataturk Library; Yapi Kredi Sermet Cifter Research Library: Yazmalar Katalogu, Nadir Kitaplar Katalogu.
Sayat Akbas
Born in 1977, Kadikoy Istanbul. He graduated from Getronagan High School (1994) and Istanbul Bilgi University International Relations Department (1996). He completed his MA degree in the same department of the same university (2001). After working in different jobs, he started to work for Sahaf Turkuaz in 2004.
